TJ Reid struck for 0-9 as Kilkenny comfortably cruised towards a 0-29 to 0-7 win against Westmeath in their Leinster senior hurling championship opener at Nowlan Park.
Minus the services of the injured Billy Drennan, the Cats had minimal fuss in picking up the points in this one as the returning Reid, Adrian Mullen and John Donnelly led the way in the scoring stakes for them.
The holders had been 0-4 to 0-0 up inside six minutes before Joey Boyle posted the visitors’ first score and, from there, Derek Lyng’s men would hit seven points without reply on their way towards an emphatic 0-17 to 0-4 half-time lead.
Cillian Buckley and Conor Delaney both came off the bench for Kilkenny in the second-half, as they added a dozen more points to their tally after the turnaround to inflict a heavy opening loss on the outclassed Lake men.
