Tipperary needed a couple of late goals to edge past Waterford (3-9 to 0-11) towards a Munster senior football championship semi-final date with Kerry.
David Power’s men made a strong start in Thurles to run up a 0-4 to 0-1 lead but the visitors stayed in the fight and only a goal from the returning Steven O’Brien saw Tipp lead at the break, 1-5 to 0-5.
Waterford were the better side early in the turnaround, kicking over three points and they hit the front when Darragh Corcoran netted a 59th minute goal for them.
Stephen Quirke hit back with a quick goal for the 2020 champions after some brilliant work from Jack Kennedy and the Deise fight was finally killed off when Paudie Feehan netted the home side’s third goal in injury-time.
The win progresses Tipp towards a provincial semi-final clash with the All-Ireland champions on Saturday week, while Waterford head into the Tailteann Cup looking for their second competitive win of 2023.
