Sligo backed up promotion by capturing the Allianz Football League Division 4 title at Wicklow’s expense this evening.

It finished 2-10 to 0-14 at a rain-soaked Croke Park, where goals from Niall Murphy and Paul Kilcoyne either side of half-time made the difference for the Connacht men.

Wicklow had started this decider in brilliant fashion, settling in with the first four points via Mark Kenny, Kevin Quinn (2, 1 free) and JP Hurley.

Murphy eventually got the Yeats County off the mark after 16 minutes and some 13 minutes later he’d have the ball in Mark Jackson’s net to trim the margin to one.

A Jackson ‘45’ left it at 0-8 to 1-3 for the interval and Sligo soon had the margin down to one again before Kilcoyne got fed through and raised the green flag for his team’s first lead of the evening.

Luke Towey and Pat Spillane sailed over points to extend the advantage and in the closing stages corner-back Nathan Mullen, who was instrumental in his side’s first goal, got forward to land a point before Murphy all but ensure the win for Tony McEntee’s charges.
