Kerry bounced back from their fifth round defeat at the hands of Tyrone by seeing off Roscommon 1-12 to 0-12 tonight in Tralee.
With relegation a possibility heading into the last two rounds, the holders needed a response when the Rossies came to visit and they made the perfect start at Austin Stack Park.
An early point from Dara Moynihan was backed up by a David Clifford goal in the fifth minute that saw the Kingdom ace fed in perfectly by Tony Brosnan and providing the finish low to the Connacht men’s net.
Kerry native Conor Cox would get the visitors off the mark with a 12th minute free and they battled hard to go in at the break only trailing by four (1-7 to 0-6).
Two more from Cox (one a free) helped trim the margin further early in the restart for Davy Burke’s charges, but the points of Paudie Clifford, Tom O’Sullivan and Sean O’Shea (free) steadied the home side’s ship as they went back toward a five-point lead.
Cox and Donie Smith raised white flags towards the end to leave a goal in it but it’d never come the Rossies’ way as Jack O’Connor’s men recorded their third win of the campaign.
