Johnny Heaney’s goal seven minutes from the end helped Galway pick up their second win in Division 1 of the Allianz Football League this afternoon at Monaghan’s expense.
It finished 1-13 to 0-10 at Pearse Stadium, where the hosts were forced to play the entire second-half with 14 men following the dismissal of Peter Cooke deep in first-half injury-time.
Having had the wind at their backs for the opening period, Monaghan took in a 0-8 to 0-7 lead at the break but would only manage two Rory Beggan frees after the turnaround.
Beggan put the Farney men two to the good within a minute of the restart and levelled the sides at 0-10 apiece with 15 minutes to go before conceding an unanswered 1-3.
The Tribesmen introduced Shane Walsh for his first minutes in a maroon jersey in 2023 and they'd have their tally up to a dozen when Heaney fired in past Beggan to wrap up the victory.
