Galway battled past Tyrone towards their first win in Division 1 of the Allianz Football League this afternoon.

It finished 0-16 to 0-13 at Tuam Stadium, where the hosts found another gear in the second-half to kick nine points against the wind and earn their victory.

A brace of early points from the outstanding Matthew Tierney helped the Tribsmen towards a 0-5 to 0-1 lead by the 27th minute and the scoreboard would read 0-7 to 0-3 in their favour at the half.

After some wayward shooting, Tyrone started to find a bit of rhythm after the turnaround to eat into the hosts lead and Cathal McShane’s point cut their deficit down to one by the 44th minute.

Padraic Joyce’s men steadied the ship with frees from Tierney and Ian Burke and four more points would sail over the Red Hands’ bar to ensure the Connacht champions’ first win of the campaign.
