Fermanagh got their Allianz Hurling League Division 3A campaign up and running by springing an upset against Mayo with a 2-18 to 2-16 victory in Ederney this afternoon.

Jimmy Tormey’s goal in the 44th minute proved crucial for the hosts as they were able to hold out and condemn their Connacht counterparts to a first defeat of the campaign.

It was Tormey that hammered in the Ernesiders’ first goal on the half-hour mark and it came either side a brace of majors from Adrian Phillips at the other end that saw Mayo towards a 2-11 to 1-11 lead at the break.

The pivotal moment came in the third quarter though when Luca McCosker’s long range free was flicked to the Westerners’ net by Tormey, as Fermanagh were able to hang on with points from Sean Corrigan, McCusker and Brian Teehan proving big down the home stretch.

In Dr Hyde Park, Louth were able to bounce back from their opening round defeat to Armagh with a 2-16 to 0-15 win over Roscommon.

Ryan Walsh and Conor Murphy netted goals for the visitors that saw them towards a 2-10 to 0-7 half-time lead against the stunned hosts.

The Rossies managed to cut their deficit down to five before Liam Molloy and Mark Gahan struck points at the other ended which secured the victory for the Wee County.
