Ballyhaunis GAA has paid tribute to former Mayo hurler and beloved clubman Pierce Higgins following his death after a long battle with motor neurone disease.

The married 45-year-old father-of-two won a remarkable fourteen county titles with Ballyhaunis and represented the county with great pride and honour during a fourteen-year career.

He was a member of a well-known sporting family, his brother Keith, one of the finest players ever to don the Mayo jersey, lined out alongside him in the Christy Ring Cup semi-final defeat to Carlow back in 2008. 

The Ballyhaunis club confirmed the sad news of Pierce's passing on Twitter: "Ballyhaunis GAA is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our clubman and former player Pierce Higgins (45) who passed away at his home earlier this morning."

"We offer our sincere condolences and pledge our support to Pierce’s heart-broken wife Clare,his children Erin and Ellie, his parents Pete and Kay, to his brother Keith, niece Ivy-Marie and to the members of the extended Higgins, Gallagher, Conroy families & wide circle of friends.

"A winner of 14 county titles, Pierce also represented his county with distinction over a fourteen-year career. He was a member of the Mayo team that lost out narrowly to Carlow in the 2008 final of the Christy Ring Cup.

"Pierce was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in 2017. Despite the daunting challenges that he faced, Pierce’s unbending stoicism and radiant positivity have been an inspiration to all and especially to those closest to him.

"Arrangements for Pierce’s funeral:
Reposing at Donnellan's Funeral Home, Clare Street, Ballyhaunis, on Sunday evening from 3pm-6pm.

"Funeral Mass on Monday morning at 11.00am in St Patrick’s Church, Ballyhaunis.

"House is strictly private."
