Rathmore made sure it’d be a Kerry double success in Croke Park today as they edged out Galbally Pearses (Tyrone) by 1-11 to 0-11 to capture the All-Ireland club intermediate football title.
After their county’s junior champions Fossa overcame a stern test from Stewartstown Harps earlier in the day at headquarters, Rathmore were able to hang and claim the silverware in what was a battle to the final whistle.
Kerry’s All Star goalkeeper Shane Ryan, who plays outfield with his club, weighed in with a decisive 1-3 for the winners and his goal in the 23rd minute sent them towards a 1-5 to 0-4 half-time lead.
James Darmody and Ryan fired over points early in the second-half to increased the Kingdom men’s lead and by the 53rd minute they were seven points clear.
Then came a crucial juncture in the decider when Daniel Kerr got through one on one for Pearses and shot for the net only to denied by a sublime save from veteran Kenneth O’Keeffe in the Rathmore goal.
The closing stages saw the Ulster champions keep the heat on their opponents, outscoring them by 0-6 to 0-2, with top scorer Conor Donaghy to the fore but Rathmore were able to see out the victory and write their way into the history books.
