Mayo booked their place into the Connacht FBD League final with a 2-18 to 3-12 win against Galway at the NUIG Connacht Air Dome.
Kevin McStay’s men broke away in the second quarter in Bekan, with Paul Towey’s goal on 23 minutes opening up a five-point lead for them and James Carr would hit the Tribesmen’s net late in the half to turn the screw.
The Ardagh clubman’s strike saw Mayo take in a 2-9 to 0-5 lead and the trailers looked done and dusted until Tomo Culhane fired in their first goal in the 43rd minute.
Culhane added a point that cut the margin down to five for Padraig Joyce’s side and while scores from Aiden Orme, Towey, Carr and Kuba Callaghan helped put the Mayo lead back into double figures, there’d be another push from the Connacht champions.
It saw Matthew Tierney’s 63rd minute goal being backed up by another Culhane major that had the scoreboard reading 2-17 to 3-12 with four minutes to go.
Mayo goalkeeper Rory Byrne would deny Nathal Grainger the net in the last minute of normal time before Bob Tuohy’s point eased their nerves and eventually sealed their final berth against Roscommon next Friday night.
