Ballyhale Shamrocks avenged last year’s All-Ireland club SHC final defeat by edging Ballygunner with a 1-16 to 0-16 victory at Croke Park this afternoon.

TJ Reid’s 48th minute penalty proved decisive for the Kilkenny kingpins as they booked their place into another Tommy Moore Cup decider where they are set to face Dunloy Cuchullains of Antrim next month.

Reid, who finished with 1-8, had missed a penalty minutes earlier, but no mistake the second time round as his strike put Ballyhale into a 1-14 to 0-13 lead.

From there, Ballygunner would find no way back as their reign ended with a three-point defeat.

The first-half at headquarters had been airtight and two superb saves from Stephen O’Keeffe in the Gunners’ goal was what saw them go in level at the break (0-11 to 0-11).

A few Reid points saw the Leinster champions up by two and the holders would narrow it down to one before the Cats’ marksman made amends for his missed penalty by hammering in his second opportunity from the spot.

The Shamrocks now head for their fourth successive final where they’ll face a novel opponent in Dunloy in the new year.
