The death has taken place of the respected Cork sports writer Michael Ellard.
A journalist with the Evening Echo and The Cork Examiner for 40 years, Michael reported on a wide variety of sports, but was best-known for his coverage of GAA affairs in the Rebel County. His last report for The Examiner was a Cork SHC clash between Muskerry and Avondhu in 2010.
Michael was a talented hurler and footballer with Na Piarsaigh before becoming a reporter. He was also part of the Cork squad that contested the 1965 All-Ireland U21 football final.
Michael, whose funeral will take place tomorrow (Tuesday), is survived by his partner Denise and her son Scott, sisters Irene, Joy and Gwen, brothers Timothy, Alan and Hilary, sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and his many friends.
