Two first-half goals were key as Palatine defeated parish neighbours Tinryland by 2-8 to 2-6 earlier today to claim the Carlow senior football championship title.
The two sides squared off in the first SFC decider together since 1950 and the game itself would see goals from Jamie Kenny and Thomas Sheehan (penalty) usher Palatine into a 2-4 to 0-3 half-time lead.
The would-be winners ran their lead up to as much as nine points after the turnaround but Tinryland were never willing to throw in the towel and dwindled their deficit down to just a point.
Diarmaid Walshe’s ‘45’ somehow found the net for the trailers and captain Shane Redmond would lash in another major to put the heat on. Sub Paul Broderick nearly levelled the game with a free from the sideline but it drifted just wide and, at the other end, Conor Crowley was able to provide what proved the insurance point for Palatine’s first county title since 2016.
