Ballygunner won a record-equalling nine consecutive Waterford senior hurling championship title this afternoon when seeing off Mount Sion with nine points to spare at Walsh Park.

On a day punctuated by poor shooting and even poorer weather, goals in either half by Pauric Mahony and Peter Hogan, allied with a string of brilliant saves from All-Star goalkeeper Stephen O’Keeffe, inspired the All Ireland champions to a 2-11 to 0-8 victory.

Austin Gleeson, who scored 0-5 (four frees), and Stephen Roche took the fight to Ballygunner, but John Meaney's charges were facing an uphill battle after Mahony's opening goal parachuted the holders into a 1-5 to 0-3 half-time lead.

Billy O'Keeffe was introduced as a 43rd minute substitute and made an immediate impact by scoring two points in succession to extend Darragh O'Sullivan's side advantage.

Waterford star Gleeson answered back with a superb effort, but when Hogan hit the net with eight minutes remaining there was no coming back for Mount Sion.
