Ballygunner's bid for a clean sweep of Waterford SHC, IHC and JHC 'A' titles got off to the perfect start last night when they were crowned intermediate champions at Ballysaggart's expense.
Brought forward from the weekend to avoid a clash with the SHC and JHC 'A' finals which Ballygunner are also involved in, last night's final under lights in Fraher Field was an epic contest which ended in a 2-29 to 3-20 victory for the Gunners' second string after extra-time.
County U20 Jake Foley scored 1-8 from play in a game which was level 10 times. All-Star Stephen Bennett shot 2-13 (2-4 from play) for 'Saggart, but still finished on the losing side.
'Saggart looked to have done enough in normal time when they led by three points late on, but an injury-time goal from wing back Tom Gallagher forced extra-time and Ballygunner eventually prevailed.
Ballygunner's third team face Colligan in the JHC 'A' final in Fraher Field tomorrow afternoon. Then on Sunday, their first team goes in search of a nine-in-a-row of SHC titles against city rivals Mount Sion at Walsh Park.
