Sligo were put to the pin of their collar by a battling New York side in the Connacht SFC quarter-final at Gaelic Park today but Tony McEntee's charges showed their resilience to dig out a 1-16 to 0-15 win in injury-time.

An entertaining contest between two closely matched teams and watched on by 4,000 spectators in the Bronx sunshine looked to be heading for extra time until a late Sligo scoring burst which yielded three points courtesy of Niall Murphy (2), Aidan Devaney and Patrick O'Connor got them over the line in front.

Coolera-Strandhill clubman Murphy (0-5) and Sean Carrabine (1-3), whose goal gave Sligo a slender 1-8 to 0-10 half time lead, stepped up to the plate for the Yeats County, and their reward is a semi-final meeting with Roscommon in two weeks' time.

For New York, their wait for a first championship win goes on after 22 attempts but Johnny McGeeney's men will have a second game this year in the inaugural Tailteann Cup on Irish soil.

They were well served by the outstanding Adrian Varley - who contibruted 0-7 before being black carded by referee Sean Hurson near the end - while his fellow Galway native and All-Ireland SHC winner Johnny Glynn caused the visitors plenty of problems in the aerial battle.
