Louth opened their Lory Meagher Cup campaign with an emphatic 2-27 to 1-10 defeat of Lancashire in Abbotstown today.

Lancashire were well in contention at the interval when they held parity (0-9 to 1-6) after making the better start, but with Paul Matthews and Mark Gahan to the fore, Paul McCormack's charges killed off their opponents' challenge in the second-half thanks to goals from Sean Kerrisk and St Fechin's clubman Matthews.

Elsewhere, goals via Mark Treanor and Thomas Hughes (2) boosted Monaghan to a 3-9 to 2-9 victory over neighbours Cavan in Inniskeen.

Cavan registered just two points in the opening half, but improved markedly after the break, outscoring the hosts by 2-3 to 2-7.

At Carrick-on-Shannon, goals were to prove crucial with Leitrim getting the better of near rivals Longford by the minimum of margins, 4-9 to 0-20.
