Sligo are into the Allianz Hurling League Division 2B final after edging a dramatic victory over Donegal in Letterkenny this afternoon.
Joe McHugh’s sublime point in the dying stages helped the Yeats men earn the 1-20 to 1-19 win over their neighbours and advanced them to next weekend’s final against Derry.
Daire O’Maoileidigh’s goal after seven minutes looked to have the home side cruising as they went on to lead by 1-10 to 0-7 at the half.
Sligo found their rhythm early in the restart though and got points from Tony O'Kelly-Lynch, Tomás Cawley and McHugh to reduce their deficit to three.
Andy Kilcullen made it a one-point game midway through the second-half and while Donegal got three points back, they’d be wiped out in an instant when Kilcullen rebounded Conor Hanniffy’s effort to the net.
With the momentum in firmly in favour of the visitors, Hanniffy and Kilcullen struck points that drew the game level on 1-17 apiece ahead of Davin Flynn erasing another Kilcullen point in injury-time.
Hanniffy and McHugh suppled the last two points for Sligo to ensure their berth in next weekend’s final against Derry where the winners will claim promotion.
In Tullamore, Wicklow edged a 0-16 to 0-15 victory over Mayo to secure their Division 2B status and relegate Mayo in the process.
