Tipperary gave their promotion hopes a massive boost this afternoon by handing Cavan a first defeat in Division 4 of the Allianz Football League this afternoon.

It finished 1-11 to 1-7 at Kingspan Breffni, where the visitors managed the second-half superbly to see out their third victory of the campaign and deny their opponents an early promotion in the process.

Cavan looked to have been in a good position at half-time after Caoimhin O'Reilly’s goal in the 35th minute cancelled out Conor Sweeney’s at the other end some 13 minutes earlier.

It left Mickey Graham’s men trailing by just 1-5 to 1-4 at the interval and, while they had the wind at their backs for the second-half, they couldn’t make it count as scores from Sweeney and Jack Kennedy would see out the win for Tipp that moves them into second place behind the Breffni men with two rounds to go.

In Newatch Cullen Park, Leitrim came from behind to see off Carlow by 2-14 to 1-10 for their third win in the division.

Jamie Clarke’s 12th minute penalty had sent the home side towards a five-point lead midway through the first-half, but Ryan O’Rourke’s goal four minutes before the break would see the difference narrowed down to one (1-9 to 2-5) for Leitrim come half-time.

The second-half saw O’Rourke and the excellent Keith Byrne doing the damage for the Connacht men as they condemned Carlow to a fourth loss in five games.

Wexford picked up their second win of the campaign after edging Waterford 0-15 to 0-14 at Chadwicks Wexford Park.

Ciaran Regan and Mark Rossiter (free) provided the late points which secured victory for the Slaneysiders men while also handing their Deise opponents a fourth defeat.

Earlier in the day, Sligo enjoyed a comfortable 3-19 to 0-10 victory over London at Markievicz Park.
