Borris-in-Ossory pay tribute to former Laois great Christy O'Brien

Sad to report the passing of former Borris-in-Ossory and Laois hurling great Christy O’Brien.

The club took to social media to pay tribute to one of their greats.

Borris In Ossory GAA is deeply saddened to have learned of the passing of one of the greatest hurlers the club has ever seen, Christy O’Brien.

Born on March 11th 1933, Christy won 2 National Hurling League Division Two titles with Laois in 1960 and 1965, a Brady Cup medal in 1974. He won an intermediate hurling title in 1953, a Junior hurling title in 1952. He also gained 4 Railway Cup medals in the years 1956, 62, 64 and 65.

Christy won 5 Senior club titles with Borris-in-Ossory in 1956, 57, 60, 61 and 72, the first 4 of which he was captain and lined out at centre half  back. I’m 1972 he moved to the forwards and scored 3-2 in the final against Ballyfin. Christy also played for the rest of Ireland team in the Cardinal Cushing games in America in 1966.

Christy made his Laois debut in 1952. He was selected on the Laois Team of the Millennium in the year 2000

Christy retired from playing with Laois in 1970 and with Borris three years later, playing 66 times for Laois. In 2016 Christy was inducted into the Laois Hall of Fame and was further inducted into the Leinster Hall of fame in Croke Park during the Joe McDonagh cup final between Laois and Westmeath in 2019.

Christy O'Brien was one of the most successful Hurlers of his day, playing with Leinster for 9 years 1956 to 1960 and also 1962 to 1965.

On the 1st December 2017, a DVD on Christy’s life was launched by local man Noel Sherridan in the Racket Hall in Roscrea.

Borris-in-Ossory GAA extends its deepest sympathies to his wife Nan, sons Pat and Liam, daughters Cait and Isobel, his grandchildren and his wide circle of friends.

Funeral Details

Reposing at Guilfoyle's Funeral Home, Castletown (Eircode R32TN84) this Tuesday evening from 4 pm (family will be present) with prayers at 6.20pm, removal at 6.45 pm to St Canice’s Church, Borris in Ossory arriving at 7.30 pm.

Funeral Mass this Wednesday morning (9th Mar) at 11 o'c, followed by burial in Derrinsallagh Cemetery, Borris in Ossory.
