Galway defeated Offaly 2-17 to 3-10 at Pearse Stadium to go level with Derry on eight points at the top of the Allianz Football League Division 2 table.

The Tribesmen got off to a good start in sunny Salthill this afternoon with an early goal from Damien Comer putting Padraic Joyce's outfit 1-2 to 0-0 ahead.

Offaly, who were sucker-punched by a late goal in their draw against Meath eight days ago, though responded brilliantly when Bernard Allen blasted to the net to leave the minimum between the sides, 1-2 to 1-1, after 11 minutes.

Paul Conroy hit back with a couple of points for Galway while frees from Niall McNamee kept John Maughan's charges right in contention for the second-half as they trailed 1-8 to 1-6 going into the break.

However, a run of six unanswered points via Rob Finnerty (3), Comer, John Daly and substitute Finnian Ó Laoí saw the Tribesmen take a stranglehold on proceedings after the restart.

Ruairi McNamee's netted Offaly's second goal to bring them back within four points (1-14 to 2-7) on 52 minutes but this was quickly cancelled out by Sean Kelly at the other end.

They kept plugging away, and substitute Anton Sullivan grabbed their third goal via the penalty spot in the closing stages but still came up short in search for a first win of the campaign.
