Connacht sides stay in hunt for promotion from Division 2

Roscommon's Enda Smith and Shane Walsh of Galway.

Connacht sides Roscommon and Galway both scored runaway victories in Division 2 of the Allianz Football League this evening.

Following last week's draw at home to Clare, the Rossies returned to winning ways with a comfortable 1-18 to 0-10 win against Down at a windy Pairc Esler in Newry.

Anthony Cunningham's outfit got their work done early as a 4th minute penalty converted by Enda Smith powered them into an unassailable 1-10 to 0-5 interval lead.

Down actually enjoyed the brighter start when leading 0-0 to 0-2 before Smith sent goalkeeper Gary McMahon the wrong way for Roscommon's opening score and they played second fiddle to the visitors from there.

The Rossies had ten different scorers, with Eddie Nolan particularly impressive in midfield for the winners, as they pushed Down deeper into relegation trouble.

James McCartan's charges have just one point from their four outings so far, leaving them in a three-way battle with Cork and Offaly at the bottom of the table.

Cork fell to their third successive defeat of the campaign at the hands of Galway after a high-scoring and entertaining affair at Pairc Ui Chaoimh, 3-22 to 2-17.

The teams were deadlocked on 1-12 apiece at the end of the first-half before the Tribesmen scored two goals after the break to see off the hosts.

Shane Walsh bagged 2-7 for the victors, while Damien Comer also hit the net in an impressive show, maintaining their 100% record.

Earlier today, a late smash-and-grab handed Meath a share of the spoils with Offaly in Tullamore.
