After their shock relegation last season, Mickey Graham’s Cavan side booked an opening win in Division 4 of the Allianz Football League this afternoon against neighbours Leitrim.

It finished 0-12 to 0-8 in Carrick-on-Shannon, where the soaking wet conditions made it difficult for both teams at times and it was the visitors that managed to keep things to script.

Four frees from captain Raymond Galligan helped the Breffni men to edge a 0-6 to 0-5 lead at the half and while Leitrim drew matters level within seven minutes of the restart via points from Keith Beirne and Dean McGovern, ‘keeper Galligan put Cavan’s noses in front again thanks to a well-struck ‘45’.

Conor Smith, Cormac O’Reilly and Paddy Lynch grabbed the next three scores for the Blues before Crosserlough marksman Lynch grabbed the insurance point in the fourth minute of injury-time.

In Dungarvan, Dermot Ryan's late point secured a 0-10 to 0-10 draw for Waterford against Tipperary this afternoon.

There had been no separating the teams during the opening half at Fraher Field, as they went in at 0-6 apiece, and despite Tipp marksman Conor Sweeney weighing in with 0-7 over the 70 minutes, the 2020 Munster champions couldn’t claim the points.

Sean Carrabine struck half a dozen points as Sligo came away from Chadwicks Wexford Park with a 0-12 to 0-10 win over the Model County.

A brace of points from veteran Ben Brosnan had Wexford ahead 0-6 to 0-5 at half-time and the sides would be level four times throughout the second-half.

The Yeats men finished strong though with Carrabine’s point being backed up by Niall Murphy's coolly taken score in injury-time.
