Leitrim hurlers claimed their first competitive senior victory over Mayo since 1982 with an impressive 2-24 to 0-24 Connacht League Shield final win at the NUI Galway Connacht GAA Air Dome last night.
Man-of-the-match with a personal tally of 1-15, Joe Murray inspired Olcan Conway's charges to an historic success over the reigning Nicky Rackard Cup champions, who beat them by 19 points in last year's championship.
Trailing by twelve points during the early stages and without their Tooreen players, Mayo managed to trim the deficit down to two by the half-hour mark - 1-14 to 0-15.
But, Leitrim, who were also down a number of regulars, held on to their lead until the final whistle as they gave themselves a huge boost heading into the Allianz League Division 3B campaign.
