Tributes have been pouring in on Twitter since Dublin legend Philly McMahon announced his inter-county retirement this morning.
McMahon won eight All-Ireland SFC titles during a remarkable career with the Dubs which spanned 14 years.
Former team mate Bernard Brogan was amongst those that paid tribute to the Ballymun Kickhams clubman after the latter broke the news today that he has played his last game with Dublin.
Glad you were on our side bro! The ultimate warrior you want in your team. ππ https://t.co/KZvP0zGSOK

'To my teammates, the battles, the wins, the losses & special friendships that have been forged forever. You gave me a purpose in life, to use sport as a platform to help others that are struggling in life, like my brother John' https://t.co/k3axEnNyO6
A man who wore the Jersey on and off the pitch, who has spoken up and spoke out, who knows what a team and community can acheive....but hey that's just how we walk in Ballymun. #uptheflats https://t.co/JYZ0SxYxOC

What a warrior.
Not just lifting Sam but lifting a city - & the most vulnerable within in it with his advocacy.
A hero. Our hero. Our Philly.
Looking forward to seeing you continue to strive for change. https://t.co/jnfnMpZpkm
One of my first interviews in media was with Philly, still one of the best 1 on 1s I've had. Another big retirement in Dublin this year. https://t.co/AEyRHgkO4D pic.twitter.com/8obHwkdS2L

The Ballymun man has 2 Sigursons with @DCU, 2 All Stars and a @gaaleinster club title
The performance against Mayo in 2012 is perhaps his best, scoring 1.2 from corner back and holding Aidan O'Shea to a score pic.twitter.com/Zxm9BwI76B

The Ballymun tower no wrecking ball could bring down.
A self-made man who rose above unpromising odds to become a shining light for his community.
Dublin's single-minded, 21st century Lugs Branigan.
The Machiavellian centurion at the gates to the Hill 16 fortress.
@PhillyMcMahon it was great to have you at our Gala dinner in 2018. You made a lasting impression. Enjoy your retirement. https://t.co/w1NUFqBybB

An incredible individual who really inspired members of his community.
A serious footballer too who excelled on and off the pitch.
