The death has occurred of former Cavan football star Andy McCabe.

The Crosserlough native won Ulster senior football championships with Cavan in 1967 and 1969 at corner-back, enjoying an illustrious playing career with both club and county.

A tigerish defender with great skill to match, Andy also featured on Ulster’s winning Railway Cup teams in 1970 and 1971 and was a focal part of Crosserlough’s famous seven-in-a-row success.

He captained the Kilnaleck club to its third ever Cavan senior football championship crown in 1966 and from there they would go on to capture six more titles in as many years, with their county man at centre half-back a central figure.

To this day, Crosserlough’s seven-in-a-row feat between 1966 and 1972 stands unmatched by any other club in the Breffni County.

Andy himself would relocate to Kingscourt in later years and on Saturday last he passed away peacefully and surrounded by his loving family.
