Austin Stacks claimed their 13th Kerry senior football championship title after overcoming neighbours Kerins O'Rahillys by 0-13 to 0-10 in Tralee this evening.
Played before 8,453 spectators at Austin Stack Park, Wayne Qullinan's men ended a seven year-wait for the club by capturing the coveted Bishop Moynihan Cup.
Stacks made a decent start while their opponents lost their county midfielder David Moran to injury just five minutes into this SFC decider – the first between the teams in 85 years.
Darragh O’Brien’s frees were what opened up a four-point margin in the first-half, with Stacks leading 0-8 to 0-4 at the break, and they couldn’t manager to reduce it lower than three after Conor Hayes’s point early in the restart.
Sean Quilter came off the bench to kick two points that had Stacks up by doubles scores (0-12 to 0-6) and, while two Jack Savage frees and a Cormac Coffey point left O'Rahillys, they couldn’t find the goal they needed.
O’Brien saw a free cancelled out by Savage in injury-time, leaving O’Rahillys three short as Stacks now look forward to a Munster semi-final date with Newcastle West of Limerick on December 18th.
The victory marks a 13th Kerry SFC success for the Tralee club, equalling the record held by Dr Crokes who earlier today retained their senior championship status with a 2-18 to 1-8 win over Legion in the relegation playoff held at Fitzgerald Stadium.
