Down GAA mourns passing of two-time All-Ireland winning manager

Down GAA has paid tribute to their legendary All-Ireland winning manager Barney Carr who sadly passed away yesterday (Tuesday).
The St Peter’s GAA, Warrenpoint clubman guided the Mourne County to its first ever Sam Maguire Cup success in 1960 when Kerry were defeated on a scoreline of 2-10 to 0-8.
The famed team subsequently retained the coveted silverware courtesy of a 3-6 to 2-8 victory over Offaly 12 months later.
As a player, Carr won three Down SFC medals with his club and a Dr McKenna Cup medal with Down in 1944.
In 1959 he was appointed manager of the county’s senior football team and a first-ever Ulster SFC title success was achieved in his first year.
They lost out to Galway in that year’s All-Ireland semi-final but went a couple of steps further the following year.
