Rory Monks was the Thomastown hero as his 59th minute goal denied Mullinavat a five-in-a-row and in the process, secured their first Kilkenny SFC title in 36 years.
Monks' strike which was followed by a Thomas O'Hanrahan point handed the Town a 2-6 to 1-5 victory over the holders in yesterday's final at UPMC Nowlan Park. Thomastown enjoyed the better of the first-half exchanges and were full value for their 1-5 to 0-5 interval lead - Stephen Donnelly's opening goal gave them the edge.
A rejuvenated 'Vat had wiped out that deficit courtesy of Oisin Knoxs' 42nd minute major after the free-taker had a penalty saved by goalkeeper Patrick Khan moments earlier. However, they were rocked back on their heels when Monks fired home in the latter stages.
Thomastown will go forward and represent Kilkenny in the Leinster club IFC quarter-finals against Meath champions Trim on Saturday.
