Kingscourt Stars are a win away from making it back-to-back Cavan senior football championship finals after seeing off Lavey by 0-13 to 0-8 tonight at Kingspan Breffni.
The Meath border men produced the second-half goods to outscore their opponents by 0-7 to 0-2 and move into the last four of the Oliver Plunkett Cup race.
Old reliables Barry Reilly and Padraig Faulkner were very much to the fore for the Stars, kicking two of their team’s opening three points of the second-half to get them motoring.
It was the 2020 runners up that made a better start in Cavan Town, leading 0-4 to 0-2 eleven minutes in before Shane Tierney’s converted mark and a Darren Jordan point brought Lavey level.
All-Star Faulkner traded points with Tierney in the run up to the break and Reilly (mark) and Darragh Tierney would do likewise to leave it at 0-6 apiece at the interval.
Reilly (free) and Peter Corrigan had Kingscourt two in front early in the restart and while Shane Tierney registered another point to his name in response, it was the town side that turned the screw from there.
Faulkner, Philip Tinnelly, Reilly (free) and Barry Tully all raised white flags to widen the margin to five come the 53rd minute and there’d be no coming back for Lavey from there, as they only registered a Karl Duke consolation score in the closing stages.
Kingscourt now enter into tomorrow’s semi-final draw where Cavan Gaels have already booked a slot after ousting Laragh United last night.
Paul O’Connor’s first-half goal helped the Gaels earn a 1-11 to 0-10 victory over their Stradone counterparts at Kingspan Breffni where they’d led by six at the half.
Meanwhile, Lacken retained their senior status by relegating Shercock earlier today with a 1-11 to 2-6 win on their home turf at Crowe Park.
Tomorrow (Sunday) sees the other two quarter-final clashes between Ramor United and Ballinagh (4pm) and Gowna and Mullahoran (7pm) down for decision, while 2019 champions Castlerahan will look to retain their senior status when they visit Crubany for a battle with Killygarry (1pm) in the remaining relegation playoff.Tweet
