Ronan McCarthy's four-year reign as Cork football manager is apparently over.

While Cork GAA have yet to confirm his departure, a number of media outlets including the Irish Examiner are reporting that the Douglas clubman's request for a further two years at the helm was rejected by the county board executive last night.

Former selector Bobbie O'Dwyer is the hot favourite to replace McCarthy, who won't now be seeing out the final season of his agreed term. The highlight of McCarthy's tenure was last year's shock Munster SFC semi-final victory over Kerry. It came after the Rebels had gone unbeaten in Division 3 of the Allianz League to achieve promotion straight back to Division 2. However, a suprise Munster final defeat to Tipperary followed, while this year's 1-9 to 4-22 Munster final mauling by Kerry proved to be the 48-year-old's last game in charge.

A former Cork defender, McCarthy had served as a selector under Peadar Healy in 2017 before succeeding him as manager the following season.
