Oran shock St Brigid's in Roscommon SFC opener

August 20, 2021

Oran's James Fitzpatrick in action for Roscommon U20's.

Last year's intermediate champions Oran caused a shock by beating holders St Brigid's 2-10 to 0-7 in the opening round of the Roscommon SFC at Dr Hyde Park this evening.

Making their first senior championship appearance since 1998, Billy Donnellan's charges got off to a dream start when Darragh Kenny netted the opening goal in the sixth minute. Further scores from county U20 star James Fitzpatrick and midfielder Gearoid Keenan had the underdogs 1-5 to 0-2 to the good after 26 minutes.

It got even better for the team in green, white and gold as Ciaran Lawless buried the ball to the back of the St Brigid's net to push them into a 2-6 to 0-2 half-time lead, and there was no way back for St Brigid's after that.

At Abbey Park, Boyle defeated Roscommon Gaels by 2-16 to 0-13, with thanks to goals from Cathal Feely and Daire Cregg, while Michael Glaveys versus Elphin was postponed due to an unplayable pitch in Ballinlough.
