Better late than never...
Laois' 1964 Leinster MHC-winning captain Billy Phelan finally got his hands on the Walter Hanrahan Cup over the weekend.
The O'Moore County minor hurlers defeated Kilkenny in that year's Leinster final at Croke Park on a 4-9 to 3-8 scoreline but, bizarrely, there was no trophy presentation afterwards and it was only last Saturday - during half-time in the delayed 2020 Leinster MHC final between Kilkenny and Offaly at O'Moore Park - that was finally put right when Leinster GAA chairman Pat Teehan presented the cup to Billy along with his son and grandchildren.
A Laois GAA Facebook post explained that Billy has a short speech ready in the event of Laois winning, but that he never got to make it due to the absence of the Hanrahan Cup.
"There are different theories as to why the Hanrahan Cup was not present on the day with some saying that it was being replaced at the time. Others believe the Model men (Wexford won it the previous year) had little interest in returning it with Kilkenny expected to pounce once again," the post read.
