Fans heaped praise on Liam Griffin last night after the legendary Wexford manager featured on the series finale episode of Laochra Gael.
Griffin famously led the Model County to All-Ireland hurling glory in 1996 and viewers got a trip down memory with last night’s episode on TG4.
He had been inspired by the Rackards and their likes growing up, but Wexford hurling was in dire straits when Griffin took over as senior manager in 1995. It went from bad to worse from the start with heavy defeats and controversy.
In his second year over the Slaneysiders, unbeknownst to anyone he would be stepping down as soon as Wexford were out of the championship because of his wife Mary's illness.
As it happened, they would go all the way in 1996.
Here was some of the reaction on social media during and after last night’s Laochra Gael finale episode:
Well done to all involved, this was a beautiful programme about a beautiful man ... the inspiring, the trail-blazing, the power-house that is Liam Griffin. I’m SO proud to have been involved in ‘96 & I’m even more proud to call Liam my friend. #Wexford ππ https://t.co/uWDCZlY2Hw

#LaochraGael another fantastic episode. I got 2 know Liam Griffin through work with the CPA. He never mentioned his achievements with Wexford and if pressed spoke about them in a massively humble way. It was never about him and it continues to not be about him. An amazing man and
