Fans hailed Down All-Ireland winning manager Pete McGrath as he starred in the latest episode of Laochra Gael on TG4 last night.
McGrath oversaw the Mourne men's Sam Maguire Cup triumphs in 1991 and 1994, steering the ship of his native county for 13 years consecutive years between 1989 and 2002. From there he would go on to have managerial stints with Fermanagh and Louth and is currently managing his home club Rostrevor.
Last night’s latest instalment of the popular GAA series showed how The Troubles in Northern Ireland affected the GAA community during the early part of McGrath’s tenure and how he went on to guide Down to its fourth and fifth All-Ireland SFC crowns.
There was no better man to instil confidence into a team. He brought us many happy memories in his 4 years with Fermanagh. A legend of the game. Brilliant show #LaochraGael

The greatest thing about @Laochra_Gael is the way it gives a deeper perspective of the people involved & tonight’s show on Pete McGrath gave just that. He may have masterminded Down’s win over us in 1991 but you couldn’t lose to a more decent man. 1 of the good guys. #laochragael

Every episode of #laochragael is excellent. Pete McGrath’s episode tonight was so interesting. I learnt a lot about @OfficialDownGAA and I’d love to go running in those mountains, I think!! I also can’t wait for @corkery5 Briege Corkery’s episode.

Another quality episode of #LaochraGael tonight. Really interesting looking back at Pete McGrath’s involvement in the #GAA. @OfficialDownGAA & @FermanaghGAA were very lucky to have him as a Manager. @Laochra_Gael @SportTG4

Excellent Laochra Gael on @TG4TV tonight about @OfficialDownGAA’s Pete McGrath. He’s responsible in significant part for some very happy days. Bit emotional at times. Great contributions from @andun1010, @DeegoGAA & Armagh’s Jarlath Burns. @SportTG4 https://t.co/OTt7bVjzEe

Another brilliant episode of Laochra Gael anocht. No one produces these type of programmes better than @TG4TV Pete McGrath is such a likeable, modest and hugely respected figure. He gave Down and Ulster football such a massive lift in the 90s. A truly great Gael and decent man. https://t.co/Xl4uHG4Hno

#PeteMcGrath #Legend another riveting and really enjoyable #LaochraGael on @SportTG4 tonight...👍👏🏐 #Down some characters but some footballers as well, and guided in the right direction by McGrath whose passion and enthusiasm for the game remains as strong as ever... #GAA

Went to a Rostrevor Championship game last summer and was great to see Pete McGrath in action on the sidelines once again.

Incredibly positive Gaelic Football man, with a great outlook on life.
Super programme as per the usual from @SportTG4
We were raised in our house on old VCR tapes of the @OfficialDownGAA teams of the 80s and 90s. Seeing the old footage honouring Pete McGrath’s contribution to Down football is so nostalgic. Few goosebumps moments here on @TG4TV @Laochra_Gael 🔴⚫️ #LaochraGael

There’s no team like the Down team!

Great memories watching @Laochra_Gael on Pete McGrath.
“We were the team, that beat the team that couldn’t be beaten”. ❤️🖤
TweetWhat a team Pete McGrath turned that Down group of players into. Mickey Linden was a brilliant footballer. A pure natural. Dual star Greg Blaney was class too. And Pete now at 67 is still so fit and hardy he could probably tog out and kick ball himself !! #laochragael @SportTG4
