The late PJ McGrath.

Former top referee PJ McGrath, who officiated the famous 1982 All-Ireland football final between Kerry and Offaly, has died aged 79.

The Mayo native was the man in the middle for the Sam Maguire Cup decider, in which Seamus Darby’s late goal denied Kerry the five-in-a row.

Among other countless games he took charge of down the years were two All-Ireland minor finals, Railway Cup finals, national club finals and International Rules matches.

Hailing from the Kilmaine club, McGrath lined out with the Mayo senior footballers in 1966, and served as county board chairman from 1997 to 2002.

He also served as chairman of the national referees’ committee and ran for the GAA presidency in 2002 as president of the Connacht Council.
