The legendary club hurling finals in Croke Park on St Patrick’s Day were a must watch on our National Holiday. We look back at five of the best.
2018: Cuala (Dublin) v Na Piarsaigh (Limerick)
One of the greatest club finals ever played and a replay was needed to decide the winner. Cuala put their title on the line and the drawn game finished 1-22 to 2-19 after extra time.
A classic.
2012: Loughgiel (Antrim) v Coolderry (Offaly)
Liam Watson was on fire for the Ulster champions as he bagged 3-7 when Loughgiel claimed a second ever All-Ireland crown.
Goals win games and this was a seesaw battle to the end.
2010: Ballyhale Shamrocks (Kilkenny) v Portumna (Galway)
Three in a row chasing Portumna came up against the Ballyhale side that had preceded them as champions in 2007.
It was pitched as Henry Shefflin v Joe Canning but there was a whole lot more to this humdinger.
It was billed as a classic and it turned out to be every inch that.
2001: Athenry (Galway) v Graigue-Ballycallan (Kilkenny)
The most dramatic and highest scoring club hurling final saw Athenry, who led by six points with fifteen minutes to go, trail by four with minutes left on the clock. It took a dramatic Eugene Cloonan goal to send the game to extra time.
It was mayhem and bedlam all rolled into one.
1995: Birr (Offaly) v Dunloy (Antrim)
Birr would go on to become one of the greatest club team of all time, winning four titles over the next nine year but the first nearly didn’t come to pass as they needed a replay to get past Dunloy.
It was a sliding doors moment from which the Offaly side never looked back.
