Former Offaly hurling star Johnny Pilkington was the subject of last night’s Laochra Gael on TG4.
Pilkington won two All-Ireland SHC titles with the Faithful County, as well as four All-Ireland club crowns with his native Birr, and the now 49-year-old reflected on the glory years of his playing career in the documentary which received rave reviews on Twitter.
That #LaochraGael was one of the best. Johnny Pilkington what a man ππ»

Really thrilled that people got to see the “real” Johnny Pilkington tonight. The inaccurate caricature of him has been put to bed thank god. He was a brilliant hurler & teammate with the heart of a lion. You could see tonight what his family, club & county meant to him. πππ

#LaochraGael Graet show with Johnny Pilkington @SportTG4 . Great bunch of talented lads on that @Offaly_GAA team. Knew how to enjoy life on and off field. No wonder so many players are retiring, no fun for players any more. Balance wrong.

@SportTG4 Loving the Johnny Pilkington #LaochraGael - mid 90’s is why I fell in love with hurling. John Troy, Jamsie, Ciarán Carey, Martin Storeys moustache. Great days. Brilliant shining a light on these fine men

Laochra Gael on @TG4TV is one of the top sports programmes by a country mile but like anything it’s the people that make it and tonight’s episode with Johnny Pilkington was one of the best....a character yes but the programme showed the depth to one of the greats of the game.

Given the level of hurling resources within Offaly, the team which Johnny Pilkington played on was possibly one of hurlings greatest #laochragael @GAA_BEO
