Kildare have suffered a third retirement blow since their Leinster SFC semi-final defeat to Meath just two weeks ago with the news that Johnny Byrne is calling time on his inter-county football days.

The Allenwood defender has decided to join teammates Tommy Moolick and Keith Cribbin in retirement.

Byrne hadn't featured for the Lilywhites since 2018 when he lined out at wing back in their run to the Super 8s.

After taking a year out, he returned to the county squad under Jack O'Connor in 2020 but injury curtailed his involvement.

There is speculation that the talented dual-star may switch codes from football to hurling at inter-county level next season.
