Taylor says Sligo players are disappointed a refixture wasn't facilitated

Sligo manager Paul Taylor says his players are disappointed they were not facilitated with a refixture after they were unable to play their Connacht SFC fixture against Galway on Saturday.

An outbreak of Covid-19 in their camp means that they are unable to field in the scheduled Connacht semi-final in 72-hours time.

GAA President John Horan said earlier in the week that teams would have to forfeit games if they were unable to field due to a Covid-19 outbreak and Sligo have become the first side in the football championship to suffer that fate.

“It's been a difficult few days for the group,” said Taylor in an interview with Ocean FM.

“Because of the amount of Covid cases and close contacts, the numbers don’t add up to fulfil the fixture. From a football point of view it is not that we are not going, we can’t go.

“The players themselves are so disappointed, they would have thought that a refixture would have been an option. They feel that the situation has been forced on them. We have a panel of 32 available to us as per the guidelines and that is probably too few for a smaller county when this happens.

“We are still waiting on some results, the numbers don’t add up for us to travel. Right now everyone is doing well and that is what is important now.”
