Clonkill 3-16
Castletown-Geoghegan 2-16

(After extra time)

Clonkill landed three unanswered points in the second-half of extra time to down Castletown-Geoghegan and claim their third consecutive Westmeath senior hurling championship.

Played in soaking wet conditions at TEG Cusack Park, it was the holders that trailed at the end of the first-half of normal time by 1-9 to 0-7 after Aonghus Clarke hit their net in the added minutes.

Castletown-Geoghegan had been full value for their half-time lead but made the worst possible restart after sub Niall Mitchell cut through their defence and hammered home Clonkill’s first goal.

The leaders managed to weather that storm and were three points up in the dying stages when Jordy Smyth coolly finished to their net, leaving it at 2-12 to 1-15 when the full-time whistle sounded.

It was first blood to Castletown in extra time when full-forward Joe Clarke hit the net but his major would be erased straight away the other end by Mitchell.

It left the sides all square at the break, after which Peadar Scally and Brendan Murtagh (2) sailed over the points without response to put a seal on Clonkill’s 17th success in this competition.
