On the weekend when New York footballers should have been playing Galway in the Connacht SFC they will instead be fundraising for five Irish charity organisations.

The Connacht SFC tie between New York and Galway was the first championship game to be officially postponed due to the current CoronaVirus emergency.

Aware of the struggles of many in a state that has been the hardest hit in the US, Johnny Glynn's senior squad are coming together to help those who are struggling at this time.

“As a result of the pandemic across New York state, it has left many individuals, including our family and friends without any source of income,” explained New York GAA Chairperson Joan Henchy.

“Five long-established Irish organizations came together to provide financial relief for those adversely impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. Aisling Irish Center, Emerald Isle Immigration Center, New York Irish Center, United Irish Counties and our own New York GAA. This collective fundraising effort formed on the basis of togetherness within the Irish community, was entitled Sláinte.

“From this the New York Senior football Panel and Management have decided to Run 1000km in 24hrs on the 2nd of May 2020 in hope to raise much needed funds for Sláinte. A 1000km in contrast is the same distance as running from Malin Head to Mizen Head and back.”
