Down's Caolan Mooney is in a “stable” condition after being attacked and suffering head injuries in Newry in the early hours of Monday morning.

Mooney had played in Down’s Dr McKenna Cup victory over Fermanagh that Sunday afternoon before the team returned home from Enniskillen, with the incident occurring hours later in the Merchants Quay area.

The Irish News reports this morning that the 26-year-old was transferred from nearby Daisy Hill Hospital to Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital where a spokesperson confirmed that he was in a stable condition.

Mooney has been one of Down’s central figures since returning home from his stint in the AFL in 2014.

Speaking on behalf of his squad, manager Paddy Tally stated: "We’re shocked and saddened that Caolan has been hospitalised, and we understand that a criminal investigation is under way."
