A Mayo club was none too pleased to have to do without their star player in an U21 final yesterday after he was asked to attend a pre-season assessment by county senior manager James Horan.
The Western People reports how Ryan O'Donoghue, who captained the Mayo U20s last year, was a notable absentee from the Belmullet team that faced Knockmore in the North Mayo U21 'A' final in Kilcommon. The talented forward was named to start at centre forward in the match programme, but was in Castlebar instead for the county trials.
O'Donoghue, who is in his final year as an U21, was sorely missed as Belmullet succumbed to a 0-13 to 3-17 defeat.
