Popular RTÉ Sport reporter Pat McAuliffe has died suddenly at the age of 61.
The Cork-based McAuliffe was one of the most respected sports journalists in the country. He covered a variety of sports, including GAA, soccer, athletics and rugby, and was often deployed as a sideline reporter by RTÉ during the big GAA games in Páirc Uí Chaoimh, Thurles, the Gaelic Grounds and Killarney.
Pat, who also contributed to The Evening Echo's soccer coverage, was on duty at the SSE Airtricity League U19 game between Cobh Ramblers and Cork City at St Colman’s Park yesterday.
A former player with Rockmount AFC, he also served as a soccer referee and in the Munster Senior League and was due to officiate an Over35s fixture this evening. In addition, Pat was heavily involved with Rochestown GAA and the Seandún division
May he rest in peace.
TweetTotally shocked to learn of the death of my old RTE Cork colleague and friend Pat McAuliffe. We spent many happy years together in Fr Matthew St keeping the sports flag flying. Rest in Peace Pat.
