Naas CBS retained the Brother Bosco Cup (Leinster PPS 'A' SF) when defeating Wicklow Schools by 2-12 to 1-9 after extra-time at Parnell Park tonight.
A year on from their maiden success and becoming the first team from the county since 1923 to capture the provincial title, the Kildare school eventually saw off the spirited challenge of the combination side from the Garden County to claim back-to-back successes in the competition.
Goals either side of half-time in extra-time from Alex Beirne and Harry Carroll proved crucial for the holders who looked to have done enough to win in 60 minutes.
But, the Wicklow side, having missed a penalty at a crucial stage midway through the second-half, bounced back when coming from four-points down in the dying moments of normal-time to force extra-time thanks to a late 1-1 salvo from Eoin Darcy.
The sides were deadlocked at half-time in normal-time on 0-4 apiece, after a low key opening 30 minutes in Donnycarney. The Wicklow outfit went 0-2 to 0-0 up following points from Aaron Kennedy and Oisin McGraynor before Naas opened their account through Dermot Hanafin in the 11th minute.
Naas raised their game on the restart onwards and took the lead for the first time when Drew Costello pointed a '45'. Further points by Mikey McGovern (2), Kevin Quinn and Beirne pushed them 0-9 to 0-5 clear before Darcy's dramatic intervention.
