GAA president John Horan has expressed his wish for the Liam MacCarthy and Sam Maguire Cups to be kept out of pubs in the future.
The Limerick hurlers were widely praised last year after they broke with tradition by barring the Liam MacCarthy from pubs in the county. Horan's comments come after the Sam Maguire was stolen from a pub in New York the Dublin footballers had visited last October before being recovered a short time later.
“We were criticised for taking on the sponsorship of Guinness quite a number of years ago," Horan said during an address to Seanad Eireann this week.
“There was stonewall silence when we distanced ourselves from it .
“To their credit, and hopefully, this is a road to the future, the Limerick hurling team, having 45 years of a gap bridged, have never allowed the Liam MacCarthy Cup to enter one licensed premises or any alcohol to touch that cup. Hopefully, that is a step in the right direction."
