Wicklow hurling manager Seamus Murphy

Wicklow GAA are on the look out for a new senior hurling manager after Seamus Murphy decided to step down from the position.

The Wexford native has cited illness and the need for a different voice as the reasons for stepping away from the role.

Murphy released a statement which has been published in the Wicklow People and he revealed that he has given the decision a lot of thought in recent weeks.

“During the past few weeks I would have been giving this position a lot of thought and consideration, particularly as I have a health issue which needs to be cared for in the weeks and months ahead, secondly, I feel that now is the right time for Wicklow hurling to benefit going forward,” stated Murphy.

“I’ve always been a firm believer from my experience being involved with teams over the years that when there is no silverware for the trophy cabinet achieved within two years it’s best to step down and move on, even though it might be somewhat different at underage.”

Murphy was in charge of the Wicklow senior hurlers for the past two years and the county board have moved to set up a committee to find a replacement.

An early favourite for the position will be Michael Neary who worked with Murphy for the past couple of years and has had held the position in the past.
