Danny Magee celebrates a score for Armagh

Barry Shortt’s late free proved to be the difference as Armagh edged Fermanagh by 1-13 to 0-15 at Brewster Park this afternoon to mark a winning start in the Nickey Rackard Cup.

Having held a 0-10 to 0-6 lead at the halfway stage, the Orchard men were pushed all the way by the hosts after the change of ends as the scores of Jimmy Tormey and Luca McCusker brought the Ernesiders within two points of their opponents twice during the opening 10 minutes of the restart.

The scoreboard read 0-11 to 0-9 when Connor Renaghan rifled in Armagh’s goal in the 44th minutes, but Fermanagh responded well to the concession as points from McCusker and Tormey made it a two-point game again with 18 minutes to go.

Danny Magee sailed over a ‘65’ for the visitors ahead of McCusker hitting two more frees and Fermanagh then being reduced to 14 men with the dismissal of Tom Keenan in the 68th minute.

After that, Shortt’s free would be cancelled out by Ben Corrigan bought would be enough for Armagh to be denied as they held on for the one-point victory in the end.
