Down and Westmeath continued their charge towards promotion to Division 2 of the Allianz Football League by recording respective fifth wins this afternoon.

Ceilum Doherty and James Guinness bagged the goals as Down scored an emphatic 2-17 to 1-8 victory over Sligo in Newry.

The Mourne men’s second goal came via Guinness three minutes into the second-half and saw them into a 2-9 to 0-5 lead, and a Nathan Mullen goal at the other end some seven minutes later would only serve as consolation for the visitors in the end.

Meanwhile, Dessie Dolan’s Westmeath side also made it five wins from five by handing Antrim a 0-13 to 0-9 defeat at Corrigan Park.

Having led by the odd point in nine at half-time, the visitors quickly pushed their advantage out to three after the restart thanks to points from Conor Dillon and Ronan O’Toole. The margin would be the same with 10 minutes remaining and it was Jonathan Lynam that struck over the insurance score for the Leinster side in injury-time.

In Tullamore, Offaly got themselves up and running in Division 3 after crushing Wicklow by 5-15 to 0-10.

The Faithful men’s goals came from Cormac Egan, Eoin Carroll, Anton Sullivan (penalty), Jack Bryant and Jordan Hayes as they sunk the visitors to a fifth straight loss.
